Background removal FAQ
Is this background remover really free — full resolution, no watermark?
Yes. Unlimited images, full original resolution, transparent PNG export, no watermark, no signup, no credits. It can be free because the AI runs on YOUR device (via WebGPU or WASM in your browser) — we pay for no servers, so there's nothing to charge you for. Most competitors charge per image for full resolution.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Your image never leaves your browser. The AI model downloads TO your device (once — then it's cached), and every pixel is processed locally. You can verify this yourself: open your browser's network tab while removing a background — you'll see the model download, and zero uploads.
How do I remove the background from an image for free?
Drop your image into the tool, pick a model (Instant for speed, Studio for the finest edges), and hit Remove background. You get a transparent PNG at full resolution — or add a solid colour, your own backdrop photo, a drop shadow, or a sticker outline before downloading.
What AI does it use, and is it as good as remove.bg?
Two open models, honestly labelled: MODNet (Apache-2.0) as the Instant tier — small, fast, great for portraits — and BiRefNet-lite (MIT) as the Studio tier, a state-of-the-art matting model that handles hair, fur and fine edges. Studio-tier results are competitive with paid services; unlike them, you get full resolution free and can fix any spot with the touch-up brush.
Why is there a one-time model download?
The AI has to live somewhere. Instead of running it on a paid server (which is why other sites charge), it downloads to your browser once and is cached: about 13 MB for the Instant model or about 110 MB for Studio, plus a shared ~22 MB AI engine used by every AI tool here. After that, it starts instantly. We always show the size and ask before downloading anything big.
Can I remove backgrounds from many images at once?
Yes — drop a whole batch and export every cutout as transparent PNGs in one ZIP. No per-image credits, no batch caps. Services like remove.bg charge per image for this.
Can I fix spots the AI got wrong?
Yes. Use the touch-up brush: Restore paints back anything the AI wrongly removed, and Erase removes anything it missed. Most free tools don't let you edit the result at all — it's usually a paid feature.
What can I put behind the cutout?
Transparency (PNG), any solid colour, or your own backdrop photo — plus a soft drop shadow or a white sticker outline. Perfect for product shots, profile pictures, thumbnails, and stickers.
Which browsers work?
Any modern browser works via the Instant model. The Studio model uses WebGPU (your graphics card), which current Chrome and Edge support best. The tool detects your device and tells you honestly which engine it's using — no fake claims.
What image formats can I use?
JPG, PNG and WebP in; transparent PNG out at the original resolution (very large images are processed at up to 4096px on the long side). Cutouts drop straight into our free image resizer or social-card maker.
Free here · vs remove.bg & similar AI services
remove.bg's AI is excellent — but full resolution costs credits per image and your photo goes to their servers. Here the open-source AI (MODNet / BiRefNet-lite) runs on your own GPU in the browser: full res, unlimited, private.
